First principles study of H2S adsorption and dissociation on Fe(110)

چکیده
We report first principles density functional theory (DFT) results of H2S and HS adsorption and dissociation on the Fe(110) surface. We investigate the site preference of H2S, HS, and S on Fe(110). H2S is found to weakly adsorb on either the short bridge (SB) or long bridge (LB) site of Fe(110), with a binding energy of no more than 0.50 eV. The diffusion barrier from the LB site to the SB site is found to be small ( 0.10 eV). By contrast to H2S, HS is predicted to be strongly chemisorbed on Fe(110), with the S atom in the LB site and the HS bond oriented perpendicular to the surface. Isolated S atoms also are predicted to bind strongly to the LB sites of Fe(110), where the SB is found to be a transition state for S surface hopping between neighboring LB sites. The minimum energy paths for H2S and HS dehydrogenation involve rotating an H atom towards a nearby surface Fe atom, with the S–H bonds breaking on the top of one Fe atom. The barrier to break the first S–H bond in H2S is low at 0.10 eV, and breaking the second S–H bond is barrierless, suggesting deposition of S on Fe(110) via H2S is kinetically and thermodynamically facile. 2005 Elsevier B.V. Adsorption and dissociation of CO on Fe(110) from first principles
We employ spin-polarized periodic density functional theory (DFT) to characterize CO adsorption and dissociation on the Fe(110) surface. We investigate the site preference for CO on Fe(110) at hCO = 0.25 and 0.5 monolayer (ML), for different functional forms of the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) to electron exchange and correlation within DFT. At 0.25 ML, we predict the existence of a...
متن کاملThe Effect of Cu Impurity on the CO-dissociation Mechanism on the Fe (100) Surface: A Full Potential DFT Study
In this study, the theoretical calculations of CO dissociation were carried out on Cu-Fe alloy surface by a full-potential method, which made more accurate results especially on the prediction of adsorption energies. This process may be governed by either a direct route or a H-assisted via HCO and COH intermediates pathways. In comparison to the pure surface Fe (100), the presence of Cu atom en...
متن کاملFirst-principles study of water on copper and noble metal (110) surfaces
Water structure and dissociation kinetics on a model open metal surface: Cu 110 , has been investigated in detail based on first-principles electronic structure calculations. We revealed that in both monomer and overlayer forms, water adsorbs molecularly, with a high tendency for diffusion and/or desorption rather than dissociation on clean surfaces at low temperature. Studying water on other n...
متن کاملSurface strain improves molecular adsorption but hampers dissociation for N2 on the Fe/W(110) surface.
We compare the adsorption dynamics of N(2) on the unstrained Fe(110) and on a 10% expanded Fe monolayer grown on W(110) by performing classical molecular dynamics simulations that use potential energy surfaces calculated with density functional theory. Our results allow us to understand why, experimentally, the molecular adsorption of N(2) is observed on the strained layer but not on Fe(110). S...
متن کاملFirst-Principles Modeling of Direct versus Oxygen-Assisted Water Dissociation on Fe(100) Surfaces
The O–H bond breaking in H2O molecules on metal surfaces covered with pre-adsorbed oxygen atoms is an important topic in heterogeneous catalysis. The adsorption configurations of H2O and relevant dissociation species on clean and O-pre-adsorbed Fe(100) surfaces were investigated by density functional theory (DFT). The preferential sites for H2O, HO, O, and H were investigated on both surfaces. ...
